Weekly Update

June 3, 2016

From the Principal's Desk

Congratulations to this years Husky Fitness Team. The Husky’s finished in the top three with many students dominating their age group. Each year, students from Halifax in grades 1 – 6 PE classes compete to earn a spot on our team. One boy and one girl from each class represent Halifax and compete against students at their grade level from Whitingham, Wilmington, Readsboro, Stamford, Marlboro, and Dover. If you are interested in becoming a team member it is a good idea to practice fitness year round. Students compete in a 50-yard dash, 1 minute of curl ups, an endurance run, pullups, and in standing long jump.

This years’ team roster included Joshua Smith, Willow Reynolds, Matthew Worden, Reese Croutworst, Kaden Bills, Emily Mackin, William Drummey, Grace Gabriel, Darian Wade, Emily Worden, Ryan Ruiz, and Katelyn Longe.

The Halifax School recognized the success of the 8th annual Math Olympiad teams, sponsored by the Wings after School Program, on Tuesday, May 24th at all school assembly. The teams met weekly to work on problem solving strategies, and to engage in an engineering project over the12 week program. The students took 5 monthly tests, plying their skills against the approximately 150,000 other students competing. All of the students did an excellent job of representing the school on the math tests, and demonstrated a commitment to the principles of mathematics and engineering throughout the project. This year’s participants on the Middle School team were Sam Noyes (top scorer for that team), Eric Longe and Katelyn Longe. In the Elementary category, Kate LeVine was the top scorer and also received an Olympiad patch for scoring in the top 50th percentile of all national and international test takers. Other Elementary team members included Paige Lane, Darian Wade and Emily Worden. All team members received a certificate from the Olympiad committee for their participation, and the top scorers also received a trophy.

Our Graduation Date has Changed!

The 8th grade Graduation will be held Friday, June 10th, at 7:00 PM. The 8th grade graduation is a beautiful tradition in Halifax School. Every student in K-8 is involved in this wonderful celebration. All students are asked to be at the school by 6:45, so that graduation can start promptly at 7:00. The program will run for approximately an hour.

Afterward the gym is cleared of the chairs and the DJ sets up his equipment on the stage for a dance that usually runs from 8:30-10:00. There needs to be an adult present to help supervise each child at the dance. If another adult is supervising your child, please let us know who that person is.

The tradition holds that the eighth grade parents gather after school on the night before graduation and decorate the gym. On the night of graduation the 7th grade parents work in the kitchen selling snacks & drinks. We ask that 7th grade families donate a snack or a dozen baked goods for the sale. at 7:00 PM.

 Report Cards

This school year is quickly coming to an end with only three weeks left! Please make sure that all library books are returned and any overdue lunch bills are paid. Student report cards will be held at the school if there are any outstanding payments or missing books.

Fitness Day vs Field Day

Fitness Day should not be confused with Field Day. Fitness day will be Tuesday, May 31st for selected students. Fran Alfieri has selected a team that consists of 1 girl and boy from 1st grade – 6th grade for Fitness Day. This team is to represent the Halifax School at Twin Valley Elementary School where all of the schools from the Windham Southwest Supervisory Union compete against each other. Students that are chosen will bring home a permission slip for parents to fill out. Parent drivers are always needed. If you have not done the finger printing and I9 forms for volunteering, then you will only be able to drive your own child to this event. Field day will be Monday, June 13th for all Halifax School students. We will have games and activities for all of our students; everyone will be expected to participate. We will have a healthy snack of watermelon and fruit slushies.
